Smallville is an American television series produced from 2001 to 2011, comprising 10 seasons. The TV series chronicles the adventures of Clark Kent, a boy with superpowers, in the small town of Smallville, Kansas.
It all begins on Oct. 16, 1989, when a meteor shower, containing kryptonite, a radioactive material, hits the town. These meteorites have genetically altered some of the town's inhabitants, who are now endowed with superpowers.
Clark is also endowed with superpowers, but this is because of his alien origin. Clark, in fact, is found at a spaceship during the meteor shower by Jonathan and Martha Kent. The two decide to take Clark with them and raise him as their own son.
Clark discovers that he has superpowers and that exposure to kryptonite causes him pain. The TV series chronicles the vicissitudes of Clark having to learn to control his superpowers and his transformation into the greatest superhero of all time, Superman.
The first four seasons chronicle Clark's high school years as he saves the city from the evil acts of superpowered inhabitants. Later seasons, however, focus on his working career at the Daily Planet.
Notable characters at Clark's side include Chloe Sullivan, Lana Lang, and Lex Luthor. Chloe is Clark's best friend, with whom he shares a passion for journalism. Lana, on the other hand, is the school cheerleader and Clark's first great love.
Lex Luthor, a young entrepreneur and son of billionaire Lionel Luthor, is initially Clark's best friend. Over the seasons, however, his lust for power will make him Superman's arch-enemy. The TV series succeeds in effectively bringing to the stage the typical vicissitudes of teen drama and those of the superhero genre.
