The Queen's Gambit is the new Netflix TV series released on October 23, 2020. Created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, the TV series is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The series title refers to the woman's gambit, an opening in the game of chess. The series is set in the 1950s United States. Beth, an eight-year-old girl, lives in an orphanage where Mr. Shaibel teaches her to play chess. Beth is an introverted, not particularly talkative girl, afraid of the world around her. Chess, however, is a different world where Beth is at ease and of which she learns all the tricks. The orphanage distributes tranquilizers daily to Beth and the other girls, as this was a normal practice in those years. Beth is then adopted by Alma Wheatley and her husband and goes to live with the couple in Lexington, Kentucky. Beth begins participating in chess tournaments where she is noticed for her talent. Beth will then begin to win several games and become increasingly famous, but this will exacerbate her addiction to alcohol and drugs. This is a miniseries consisting of only seven episodes. The Chess Queen was a huge success becoming the most-watched Netflix exclusive series with non-original screenplay ever. The TV series was also well received by the chess community, so much so that the world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen, rated it 5 out of 6. Among audiences, too, the TV series has received great acclaim for the script and Anya Taylor-Joy's great performance as the main character. The accurate depiction of the era with the costumes and set design also drew the audience's attention.
